Bali, Day 7, January 15
Jimbaran Bay, Bali, Indonesia
Our last full
day in Bali started with some rain, which quickly cleared up so the rest of the
day was hot and humid. The first stop of the morning was for a photo op at a
huge statue depicting horses and a chariot. The statue has historical
significance for Bali but the story is too complicated to remember.
Next we
visited a monument that held numerous dioramas depicting the historical periods
of ancient through contemporary Bali. There were a number of university
students from another island there at the same time and they all wanted their
pictures taken with us. It was fun and we did our part to extend good will from
America.
At one stop
we happened upon a photo shoot of a wedding couple. They were charming and
didn't seem to mind our joining in taking pictures.
Our guide
took us to his house where we had a chance to meet his wife and two daughters,
ages 13 and 8. His wife works for a catering company at the airport. We had a
chance to try two different kinds of fruit that we don't find at home, and they
were both very good.
The last
stop before heading back to the hotel was a visit to a temple where we were
dressed in sarongs. The men were required to wear a small appropriate headdress
also. Today was a very auspicious day because it is the first day of a full moon.
People take offerings to their temples for blessings and the temple we visited
was very busy with a number of people coming and going.
Repacking
was the afternoon activity as tomorrow we leave for Bangkok. Tonight was the
farewell dinner at a restaurant out on the beach.
This has
been a great adventure and Bali is a very interesting island. The people were
friendly and willing to share their culture with us. Our group is fun and very
amiable. We now have all their names straight. We will add five more to our
group tomorrow in Bangkok.
That's it for now. Grace and Paul
